In a Nutshell:Set on the Tallis family estate in late 1930's pre-war Britain. The younger Tallis, highly imaginative Briony(Ronan), sabotages her older sister's(Knightley) sudden love affair with the housekeeper's son Robbie. She tries to make amends to her now estranged, London posted, nurse sister Cecilia. The lovers hold onto their letters and memories, hoping to survive and be reunited. But Britain's 1940's War against Germany, takes over their lives. Brilliantly staged to emphasize the imagination of young writer Briony in the first act; contrasting with the gruesome realities of Robbie's War, and the Brits 1940 retreat from the continent, to the beaches of Dunkirk. Powerful career follow up and adaptation, for Dir Wright, and screenwriter Hampton. |
