Rated 2.86/5
In a Nutshell:A well acted look back(1790's) to a lone MP's persistent attempts to legislate the abolition of Britain's slave trade to work the Jamaican sugar cane fields.Historical context of post Colonial revolutionary defeat; war with Napolean's France. Plodding, with not even a flashback to the troubled former sea captains/plantation managers verbally recounted , traumatic memories of shackled human beings. Expansive sets and expensive, authentic costuming. Dir Apted and producers should have risked an R rating, to show at least one emotional scene of the suffering of slaves and their children. Would have more U.S.and international impact and appeal.
