Review
Single preacher Dad(Jeff Bridges) and 10 yr. old Opal(newcomer Annasophia Robb) root in sleepy Naomi Florida. The town declines after the candy factory closes, and Dad hold services in a vacant retail space.Opal claims a smart, stray giant schnauzer/Irish hound dog, running amok in the local Winn Dixie. Three towns folk are singled out for supporting roles; drifter/pet shop caretaker Otis(Dave Matthews), the blind town eccentric Gloria(Cicely Tyson), and Southern belle librarian Franny(Eva Marie Saint.
Dir. Wayne Wang has turned out acclaimed(my 4 stars)movies with fascinating characters searching for life meaning(The Joy Luck Club, Smoke). Singleton's screenplay(1st) and Wayne's direction cannot decide on which theme to put forward: Girl and her dog, Single Dad and child dynamic, or the depressed town and its quirky
inhabitants. There are some touching and funny scenes.
Parents decrying violence and language even in animations, and looking for G like family entertainment, might find this a great choice for kids under ten; or family viewing on DVD. |
