In a Nutshell: Five French soldiers with self inflicted wounds, are condemned to No Man's Land, in 1916 French/German, trench warfare. Story follows Mathilde's(Amelie sensation Audrey Tatou)relentless, multi year search for her then teenage, condemned boyfriend,Manech. Similar to Cold Mountain, but with a happier ending. Dir. Jeunet's extreme close ups, camera angles, sepia and golden tones in Mathilde's travels vs. the blue of combat, are as mesmerizing as the exceptional artillery bombardments are to combat cinematography/sound. Exceptional supporting roles. The personal tragedy of the last, multi year "uniformed" War defenders in France, had to be a must see, sell out there! The frequent narration, copius characters and heavy dialogue, will challenge the patienceand ability to sort out those characters and the plot, for U.S.and the non French fluent, subtitle readers.
